Tips and techniques to defend your identity

Financial fraud is so common today that it has become one of our century’s leading crimes. Identity thieves and scammers target older adults in particular, stealing billions in savings and financial security, resulting in devastating losses each year for those later in life. There’s only one you—but it takes work to keep it that way.

On this upcoming Tuesday, February 4th, the District Attorney’s Office will be sharing specific, actionable steps for spotting and stopping identity theft and fraud, whether online, on the phone or through the mail. The “Fraud Prevention and You” workshop will cover how to fight theft, investment fraud and exploitation, and it will be geared specifically for adults living in the Centennial area. Discussion will include how to detect fraud and overturn the persuasion tactics of phone scammers, defending bank accounts and protecting your personal identity. Being informed helps ensure that you and your loved ones won’t be a victim.

  • Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America, and per the Federal Trade Commission, Colorado ranks thirteenth in states with the most identify fraud.
  • One of the most common scams are callers who claim you owe money to the IRS.
  • Never give out your personal or financial information over the phone; doing so is one of the #1 ways to get cheated!

The workshop “Fraud Prevention and You” will be hosted by the Holly Creek Life Plan Community and followed by lunch. The event will be held 11:30am-1:00pm and is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so please RSVP to 720.463.2130.
