Holly Creek community hosts online forum on Denver’s key urban trail

More than ever before, Denverites are turning to nature to recharge and escape from the indoors. Thankfully, Denver boasts one of the longest, continuous urban trails in the country — the 71-mile-long High Line Canal, which provides a haven for walkers, runners, bikers, bird watchers and equestrians alike.

Originally begun as a massive irrigation project in 1881 to meet the needs of expansive farms, the Canal now serves as a recreational artery for Metro Denver, providing constant natural beauty in an ecosystem entirely its own. More than 350,000 Denverites live less than mile away from the park. This includes the residents of Holly Creek Life Plan Community in Centennial, who are making good use of the trail right now, particularly since physical and emotional health are key secrets to successful aging.

Many Holly Creek residents were already active outdoor enthusiasts who continue to share their zeal for the outdoors with their neighbors. For the past six years, community members have led the way coordinating Colorado VisionWalk’s first retirement community team — “What’s in Sight for Holly Creek.” When they’re not organizing walks and events, residents like Dave and Marge Vitale regularly walk out the door for a stroll or bike ride on the High Line Canal pathway outside the community. Having the Canal just out their door is a huge bonus of living at Holly Creek.

“We walk or bike on it every day,” shared Dave Vitale. “The furthest I rode in a day this year was 50 miles. It’s great — I can get right on the trail just outside the community. We’re really fortunate here that somebody had the foresight to put it in.”
