Do you ever ask the question, “Why can’t news outlets report on the positive stories – the ones that inspire us and show the good in people?”

Thanks to a unique partnership between the Holly Creek Life Plan Community and a group of high-school age volunteers who assist older adults with technology issues, this positive and inspirational story was featured on the national news program CBS This Morning (7 am to 8 am MST).

CBS is focusing its lens on the partnership between Holly Creek and Generation Technology (Gen Tech), a not-for-profit company that specializes in providing free assistance to older adults to help them troubleshoot technology issues. They also help older adults better understand how to use new technologies. Gen Tech’s founder and CEO, 17-year-old Zachary Wang, is a recent graduate from Cherry Creek High School and will be attending Dartmouth College this fall.

Zach and his fellow high school volunteers reached out to Holly Creek’s Director of Community Life April Henderson, to see if there was a need for their services. April immediately saw the value of partnering with Gen Tech, not just for the technology benefits but also for the intergenerational connections this would create.

Gen Tech had been visiting Holly Creek residents in the comfort of their own apartments for more than a year when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. This didn’t stop Holly Creek or Gen Tech from continuing to educate residents about technology. Just last month, Gen Tech provided a live virtual event for older adults inside and outside Holly Creek on how to use Zoom to stay connected with family and friends.

A story on this program ran in the Denver Post’s YourHub.com section and caught the attention of CBS correspondent Barry Petersen, who lives in Denver. Barry call CBS headquarters and the result is Saturday’s national news story.
